quick information for SP2 hotfix

  • The update can be applied before or after Service Pack 2 installation

  • Q: How can I tell if the update has worked?
A: The License Type text on the Convert License Type page in Central Administration no longer contains the word “trial”

  • Q: I applied the update and now I can’t enter anything in the Convert License Type page in Central Administration, is this right?
A: This is expected behavior if your license type is “Office SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License”

  • will included this hotfix to SP2 after 4-6 week

MOSS SP2 VS Cumulative Updates for April 2009

After the Project server owner tested on MOSS SP2 and find out a lot bug is not fix by SP2 then only will fix by the April CU.

So i will start study on what is April CU?? After search on internet then get some information from Office Sustained Engineering blog .

"If you do not use Cumulative Updates, this blog will probably not be interesting to you. If you are only using SP2, please refer to the following blog post for more details."

Some FAQ is listed at the blog, so i will share some interesting FAQ to all about the CU.

4. What should we install to get the latest updates for all Office products?
For our general customer base, we recommend installing SP2. If you have needed updates in the April CU, we recommend installing both SP2 and the April CU.
--> yeah , i need it for my Project server

9. Will server-packages be released for Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) in the April CU? How different will they be from SP2?
Yes, the Microsoft Office Sustained Engineering team began the trend of releasing consolidated packages for server products due to a high volume of customer requests for this type of package. This was first done in the December CU.

In the April CU too, there are 2 cumulative server-packages:
(1) WSS server-package - that contains updates for WSS
(2) MOSS server-package - that contains updates for ECM, Project Server, Search, Excel Services, InfoPath Server and MOSS

The server-packages include all hotfixes for server products that the Microsoft Office Sustained Engineering team has ever released. However, there are files updated in the service pack that have never been updated in a hotfix. In order to get all the latest updates, you need to install SP2 and the April CU server-packages.

Configure MOSS 2007 to use Multiple My Site Web Applications

As you may know when a MOSS 2007 farm is provisioned, one of the first tasks that you have to perform is to create a Shared Service Provider (SSP). One of the components of the SSP is a My Site host location however the SSP is associated with a single My Site Web application by default. Recently I was asked if it was possible to use multiple My Site Web applications within a single MOSS 2007 farm. This could be useful for operational/performance/capacity planning purposes, this is totally possible and I’ll fully outline the steps required.

In the example the farm that I’m using the SSP (including My Site http://mysite ) and Intranet Web application have been created (http://intranet)

1. The first step is to create a Web application for the new My Site host location, I’ll not bore you with the steps, there are outlined here if you have never done this before - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263256.aspx it’s important that you choose a friendly URL, I have selected http://mysite2

2. Once the Web application has been created we need to create a Site Collection at the root (/). To do this:

a. Launch Central Administration

b. Select Application Management

c. Select Create Site Collection

d. Select the MySite 2 Web Application from the Web application drop down

e. Give this an appropriate title for example My Site 2

f. Ensure that / is selected for the Web site address – http://mysite2/

g. Within the template selection select the Enterprise tab and select MySite host location

h. Enter an appropriate Site Collection administration – Click OK to create the Site Collection

3. We now need to configure the new My Site host location as being trusted, to do this launch the SSP administration site (link should be available from the quick launch within Central Administration)

4. Within the User Profiles and My Sites section select Trusted My Site host locations

5. The Trusted My site host locations should be empty, to add an entry for the new My Site host location click New. Enter the URL for the new My Site host location and an optional description.

You may be wondering how exactly do we configure new My Sites to be created within this new location? The answer is using an audience. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of audiences you may find the following article useful -http://blog.tomaselfving.com/2007/05/audience-targeting-in-moss-2007.html

A brief description is “Audiences are used to target content to users based on their jobs or tasks within the organization. Users in an audience will see audience-specific content on the site that is not available to other users.”

You then need to either use an existing audience or create a new audience specifically to direct users to the appropriate My Site host location. For example If I have a company with offices in six major cities I may decide to create a My Site Web application for each, then create an audience for each office and configure the Target Audience for each Trusted My Site Host Location to point to the relevant office. The audience compilation (which can run on a schedule) could use the AD attribute Office for example.

When a user logs into http://intranet and click the My Site link for the first time it will look at the audience that the user is a member of and then direct them to the appropriate My Site based upon their location (at least in this example – one thing I haven’t tested is the behavior when a user is a member of multiple audiences and that are associated with trusted My Site host locations– one for a rainy day perhaps J

How to upgrade to SharePoint 2007 SP2 - Step by Step

i have found out one web sites is very detail in the MOSS SP2 installation step , so here is the websites to shared with you all.

http://blogs.architectingconnectedsystems.com/blogs/cjg/archive/2009/05/10/How-to-upgrade-to-SharePoint-2007-SP2-_2D00_-Step-by-Step.aspx

if you are deploying to MOSS larger farm (have minimum 2 web front end servers with NLBS) , you need to take care on the post step.

that mean after you install the sp2, you are going to run the psconfig wizard right? For large farm you need to run all wizad for web front end at the same time.

the step as below:

Run the wizard start from Node A , until the step 2/9 task will prompt up the button to click ok , you need to stop here and go to node B start run the wizard, until the 2/9 step then you go to node C to do the same.

when all the node is at same step then only you get back to Node A click ok to continue let the wizard running until complete then continue for other Node. (one time run for one node only!!)
